Brief 008: Is university really the only way to become skilled?

What if you learn best by doing?
That’s where vocational and technical education comes in. Simply put, it focuses on teaching you practical skills you can use to do a job or work in a particular field.
Think:
- Plumbing
- Electrical work
- Automotive repair
- Hairdressing
- Catering
- Fashion and tailoring
- Technical and digital skills
- Construction and other trades
Instead of spending most of your time studying theories, you spend a lot more time learning how to actually do things.
Here’s something I find interesting: We sometimes talk about these careers as if they are somehow ‘less than’ traditional professional careers.
But think about it.
Practical skills are skills.
Many of these skills can become careers, businesses and even entire companies.
So vocational and technical education isn’t really about choosing between “proper education” and something else. It’s another way of building capability.
My question for you is: Do you learn better by doing or by reading?
